I've always fished for either trout in a stream or largemouth and brim in small ponds. I've been wanting to go smallmouth fishing, i've only caught 1 in my life and it was on lake fontana right where Hazel creek feeds into it and it was a nice one. I live in Rutherfordton, NC, close to marion and about an hour from asheville. Can ya'll give me some idea's where I could catch some smallmouth? I've heard there were some good ones on the South Toe, but I just wouldn't know where to begin to fish for them. And what type of flies do you use to catch them? Steamers?

Soon as the water turns over, we're gonna hit the French Broad hard this year. It was off as far as fish last year, but I think they are making a comeback. Streamers, poppers, and sliders all work for flies. Do you have a boat? If not, give Scott Cunningham a call (Scott on this board). He knows all things smallmouth for the Toe rivers and is a hell of a Guide.

Be glad to point you in you in the right direction. In fact you have smallies right there in Rutherford County. Drop me a PM and I'll be glad to help you find some smallies.

If you just want general areas... downstream of nearly all Hatchery Supported streams in NC.

I like to fish for them with top water poppers and the time is near! You can catch them right now on streamers but after the next few warm days the smallies will get active.

Thanks for the kind words Bender, wasn't sure what you were going to say about me! I wanna hook up with y'all on the FB this year, think I only fished it 3 times last year.

Dick, with all due respect...I do have a house I gotta be done with by June...and I'm only at the insulation stage. Y'all need to plan another spring trip over to my house...we can work on the house and raise hell in my yard at night with the campfire goin', and fish smallies during the day.

Shoot Bender 6-11 M-F, all day Saturday and from 1 pm on Sundays just so happens to be when I'm not available.

I know the pains you are going through, my house is only three years old and I'm still working my butt off on it.

Spoolitup the time is NOW, smallies are getting very active.

'I'd rather be a hammer....than a nail.' Hope the building and various home improvement projects are allowing for some fishing.

I've never fished/floated the FB. Thinking about floating later this month from Hot Springs down to whatever landing below...??? I floated this with wife & two kids a few years back when the water was really low.

Smallie fishing is a lot of fun. I mainly fish them with medium poppers and wiggle minnows, streamers like woolly buggers & clousers etc. Have yet to be around at the right time to throw the big white mayfly at 'em... Wanting to try out the real small poppers - pop it, let it sit. Pop, sit. Theory a buddy was telling me of less is better at times. He says he's gotten some real nice fish this way.

That's right on Kim.... but you know that you just revealed the secret of all secrets. I think that's why they call them poppers..... it makes everyone want to pop them.
