The Blue Winged Olive
1. Wrap thread from behind the hook eye to mid shank of hook. 2. Tie in hackle tips (wings) on top of hook shank just in front of the middle of the hook shank. Make 4 to 5 wraps with thread to bind the wings down to the shank. The length of the wings from the last thread wrap to the tips should be slightly longer than the hook gap and extend past the hook eye. 3. Raise the wings with your free hand and make thread wraps in front of the wings so that they will stand upright and be slightly angled forward. 4. Separate the wings from side to side and wrap thread between the wings and around the hook shank in a “figure 8” pattern. This will “flare” the wings apart. The tips of the wings should end up at 10 o’clock and 2 o’clock looking at the fly from the front. 5. Wrap the thread back to the hook bend, making a consistent thread base, and then wrap forward to the hook point. 6. Tie in the hackle fibers for tail. The end of the tail should hang off the back shank of the hook level and should be as long as the hooks shank itself. Be sure not to wrap the fibers too tightly at the initial tie in point, as this will “splay” the tail fibers in different directions. You want to have all the tail fibers going in the same direction so that the rear of the fly will float. The thread should end up at the hook point. 7. Apply dubbing to thread (you can wax the thread and apply dubbing directly or tie a dubbing loop). 8. Wrap the dubbed thread from the point where the tail starts off the hook shank forward to a point slightly behind the wings to form a tapered body. (The body should get bigger as you wrap forward). 9. Tie in hackle just behind the wings with the dull side of the hackles facing you. 10. Wrap the brown hackle 2-3 times behind the wings and 2-3 times in front of the wings being careful not to disturb the position of the wings. Tie off the hackle at a point slightly behind the hook eye. Clip excess tip. 11. Clip excess materials around the hook eye. Whip finish or make 3 or 4 half hitches with thread just behind hook eye. Clip thread from fly. 12. Apply small amount of head cement on thread at clip point.
